We’ve known for some time that Apple is redesigning the iPhone screen this fall, with the notch to be replaced with a “pill + hole” aperture on Pro models, and bezels to be shrunk. But we didn’t know exactly what that meant in terms of screen sizes…until now.
Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants and a constant source of rumors about Apple, has tweeted the screen sizes of the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, as well as the current 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max. The 2022 models are larger, but not by much, with the Pro adding 0.06 inches (about 1.5mm) and the Pro Max just 0.01 inches (about 0.25mm) more.
(Note that since these will again be screens with rounded corners, the size of the diagonal of the screen is largely theoretical: it is the distance between the point where opposite corners wouldif the screen were a crisp rectangle.)
Young explains that these changes were “due to pill + hole replacing the notch and narrower bezels, though it’s not clear how the former will affect diagonal spacing. Pinholes take up less space than a notch, so you’ll have more pixels to look at, but in theory it shouldn’t make any difference to the length of the sides. As far as we can tell, the numbers above are only affected by the bezels, which is why they have changed so little.
Indeed, and somewhat predictably, several replies to the tweet poked fun at the magnitude of the change, saying that a hundredth of an inch is not enough reason to upgrade (which is true enough), and echoing the common refrain that Apple forgot how to innovate. Of course, the essential change here is the replacement of the notch, and the fact that Apple is only applying this change to the Pro models (and perhaps also giving them a next-gen processor) probably means a lot of upgraders are going for it. more expensive models. Apple usually knows what it’s doing.
In terms of source reliability, Yang can usually be relied upon. In fact, until recently it had a 100 percent accuracy rating on AppleTrack, although it has since fallen to 92.9 after a bug related to the branding of the new iPhone SE. He was also wrong in his predictions about the 27-inch iMac: Young was one of those who expected the new iMac to arrive in March, and we got the Studio Display.
