Latest Kerala Local News: “New plant only after solving the lack of water in the tank” –

Thiruvananthapuram: A decision on the proposed water treatment plant at Aruvikkara will only be taken after improving the existing sources to overcome the water shortage as various projects and proposals for it are under consideration, KWA Superintendent K Noushad said.

He said building a new plant would be pointless if there was not enough water in the Aruvikkara reservoir. Efforts are underway to get more water to the Aruvikkara Reservoir and the Peppara Dam. Once these efforts bear fruit, we can think of a new factory there, he said.
An executive engineer from KWA proposed to build a 102 MLD factory in Aruvikkara in addition to the existing four factories. At a time when the existing factories in Aruvikkara are facing water scarcity, what good is a new factory? said the superintendent.

KWA had also sent a request to the Forest Department to raise the water level at Peppara Dam to 110.5 feet from the current level of 107.5 feet. By raising the level, KWA can store 70 million cubic meters of water against the current storage of 56 million cubic meters.
The KWA also plans to bring water to Aruvikkara from the Neyyar dam by constructing a canal as well. During the summer there will be a shortage of water and to remedy this we are planning various measures. Only after finding a solution to the shortage can we think of a new plant, he added.
KWA is unable to use nearly half of the water in Aruvikkara Reservoir due to massive silt deposition. To overcome this, KWA asked the Kerala Irrigation Infrastructure Development Company to de-silt the reservoir. The reservoir has a storage capacity of two million cubic meters of water but due to the deposition of silt, half of the water remains unusable.
Due to water shortage, most parts of the city such as Kazhakkoottam, Vizhinjam, Venganoor, Manvila, Technopark and Powdikonam are facing supply interruptions.
