Kalpetta: In the Muttil tree felling case, the tribal farmers said on Monday that the accused, Roji Augustine, approached them claiming to have the village officer’s permit to fell the trees. The tribal farmers own the land on which the trees have been felled.

Balan and Chandu, tribal farmers from Vazhavatta settlement, claimed that they did not sign any approval document in this regard. The duo reportedly only learned of the problem after Forest Department officials arrived to investigate.

According to the findings of the Kerala Police Special Investigation Team, Roji Augustine had submitted fake endorsement letters from seven farmers including that of Balan and Chandu.

Chandu said that Roji told them that they were cutting down several trees in the settlement and asked if we wanted to sell ours. “He told us he got permission from the village office,” said Chandu, whose father later asked him to sell the trees to Augustine.

“We received Rs 35,000 for each tree. Four trees were felled in the settlement. Many of them were several years old. Roji told us that he would take care of all the paperwork,” Chandu added.

Meanwhile, Forestry Minister AK Saseendran reiterated on Tuesday that the defendant in the case had cut trees on revenue land and said the government was not going to protect the defendant in any way.

The defendants currently allege that the Forestry Department initially claimed the trees had fallen from forest land, but later changed their position upon realizing it was patta land. According to them, there is no documentation supporting the forest department’s claim that the trees were protected. However, the minister refuted these claims, stating that the government’s position remains unchanged, and they have always maintained that the trees were cut from the patta land.
