Latest Technology News: MIT’s ‘PhotoGuard’ protects your images against
Dall-E and Stable Diffusion were just the start. As generative AI systems proliferate and companies strive to differentiate their offerings from those of their competitors, chatbots on the internet are gaining the power to edit images and create them with Shutterstock and Adobe in mind. But these new AI-enhanced capabilities come with familiar pitfalls, like unauthorized manipulation or outright theft of existing online artwork and images. Watermark techniques can help mitigate the latter, while the new “PhotoGuard“The technique developed by MIT CSAIL could help prevent the former.
PhotoGuard works by altering certain pixels in an image in such a way as to disrupt an AI’s ability to figure out what the image is. These “disturbances,” as the research team calls them, are invisible to the human eye but easily read by machines. The “encoder” attack method to introduce these artifacts targets the latent representation of the target image’s algorithmic model, the complex math that describes the position and color of each pixel in an image, essentially preventing the AI from understanding what it is looking at.
The more advanced and computationally intensive “diffusion” attack method camouflages an image as a different image in the eyes of the AI. It will define a target image and optimize its image disturbances to look like its target. Any changes an AI tries to make to these “immune” images will apply to the fake “target” images, resulting in an unrealistic looking generated image.
““The encoder attack tricks the model into believing that the input image (to be edited) is another image (e.g. a gray image),” Hadi Salman, an MIT PhD student and lead author of the paper, told Engadget. “While the diffusion attack forces the diffusion model to make changes to a target image (which can also be a gray or random image).
A collaborative approach involving model developers, social media platforms, and decision makers presents a strong defense against unauthorized image manipulation. Working on this pressing issue is of paramount importance today, Salman said in a statement. And while I’m happy to contribute to this solution, a lot of work goes into making this protection practical. Companies developing these models must invest in engineering robust immunizations against the possible threats posed by these AI tools.”
