PhotoGuard works by altering certain pixels in an image in such a way as to disrupt an AI’s ability to figure out what the image is. These “disturbances,” as the research team calls them, are invisible to the human eye but easily read by machines. The “encoder” attack method to introduce these artifacts targets the latent representation of the target image’s algorithmic model, the complex math that describes the position and color of each pixel in an image, essentially preventing the AI ​​from understanding what it is looking at.

The more advanced and computationally intensive “diffusion” attack method camouflages an image as a different image in the eyes of the AI. It will define a target image and optimize its image disturbances to look like its target. Any changes an AI tries to make to these “immune” images will apply to the fake “target” images, resulting in an unrealistic looking generated image.
