Latest Kerala Local News: Mavoor Road crematorium could be reopened in a month – The Hin
As the public grows impatient with the inordinate delay in completing the renovation of Kozhikode Corporation’s crematorium on Mavoor Road, the civic body has announced that the crematorium will be reopened in a month.
Renovation of the crematorium began three years ago. There was public anger over the crematorium’s electric and gas ovens which often broke down and people had to depend on other crematoriums at the last minute.
Electric and gas ovens became dysfunctional again more than a month ago and people now have to depend on West Hill and Puthiyapalam crematoriums.
The Mavoor Road Crematorium is being renovated through the MPs Local Development Fund and the Corporations Fund. Besides three types of ovens, a prayer room and a space for performing rituals are also planned as part of the renovation carried out by the Cooperative Society of Labor Entrepreneurs of the Uralungal. The work was to be completed in May.
CPI(M) councilor PK Chandran had recently raised the issue of the Mavoor Road crematorium before the Corporation’s board meeting, alleging that only two of the 14 furnaces were working and that renovations were behind schedule, causing much inconvenience to the public.
The superintendent engineer replied that the crematorium would be fully operational within a month since 70% of the work was completed. Only some electrical work, an additional fireplace and finishing works are pending. Indecision over an automatic oven is the reason for the delay, he said.
