Stockton in California, USA witnessed a unique form of mass migration as hundreds of thousands of little toads crossed the road. According CNBC-affiliate KSL-TV, witnesses and biologists were stunned by the magnitude. One of the witnesses, Mary Hulet, told the outlet that she was driving home from the airport when she saw cars stopped in front and it looked like the road itself was moving. She spotted the Toads in the area known as the “S-curves” on Silver Avenue.
“At first I thought, ‘I’m just tired’ – like there was no way. Looking and concentrating on it, I realized it was frogs or toads crossing the road,” Ms Hulet said. KSL-TV.
The toads were spread over a stretch of road more than a mile long.
“We talk like thousands of toads crossing the road,” Ms Hulet said. “I’m like, ‘is this like toad-mageddon? What’s going on here?'”
Chris Crockett, director of aquatic activities for the Central Region of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, said the creatures were likely juvenile Great Basin toads hatched around what has for many years been a dry Lake Rush.
“These juvenile toads – often what we call shapeshifters – have decided it’s a good time to leave their area and migrate to some of these surrounding hills,” Crockett told the outlet.
However, the migration did not go well for many toads, which were run over by cars.
Some passing locals said they tried to direct traffic to help spare any toads they could.
