A parody of kind of horror and its treatment of black characters, Blackening follows a group of friends on a June 16 weekend getaway where things go south fast thanks to a surprise guest. The group finds themselves stuck playing a twisted game hosted by a mysterious killer—a la Jigsaw of Saw – and it’s surprisingly funny. Aiming for horror tropes, namely, black characters always dying first, Blackening relishes the laughs and screams as its main characters fight for survival with iconic weapons and one-liners. Based on preview viewer reactions featured in the trailer, Blackening already seems unavoidable.
Blackening hits theaters on June 16.
