Latest Kerala Local News: Kodenchery prepares for the Malabar River Festival, rafting begins

With barely a week left until the start of the Malabar River Festival and the 9th International Whitewater Kayaking Championship, Kodenchery, the upland hamlet of Kozhikode that hosts the event, is already bustling with activity. The Iruvazhinji and Chalipuzha rivers, where the festival takes place, are swollen, much to the excitement of kayakers and rafters who have come from different parts of the country to participate in the festival.

The festival is organized by the Ministry of Tourism with the support of the Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society and the District Tourism Promotion Council on August 4, 5 and 6. For the first time, the public will have the chance to experience rafting, which takes place in the two rivers under the umbrella of Paddlemonks Adventures, Kerala’s premier whitewater adventure company. Rafting packages of varying degrees of risk and difficulty and kayak training have already been made available. A raft guide and two safety kayakers accompany a team of four tourists on these rides, which can last from one to three hours.

Pre-events

Meanwhile, the festival pre-events will kick off on July 28 with the mud football competition to be held in Omassery. This will be followed by cycling expeditions to Pulikkayam from Areekode, Kozhikode and Kalpetta on July 30. Expeditions take place under the umbrella of Calicut Bikers Club, Wayanad Bikers Club and KL10 Pedallers. Gatherings will be reported by MLA PK Basheer in Areekode, T. Siddique, MLA in Kalpetta and District Collector A. Geetha in Kozhikode. The runners will be received in Pulikkayam by a team led by the provincial deputy Linto Joseph.

A walk in the rain was also organized for women trekkers through the forest alongside Thusharagiri on the same day.

The all-terrain vehicle race will take place in Kodenchery on August 2, 12 and 13. Artists will camp along the rivers to capture the live activities.

Meanwhile, KSRTC’s Budget Tourism Cell has organized monsoon trips that depart from Kozhikode Bus Station, passing through other scenic spots in the Kozhikode Highlands, to the festival venue for the three days.
