A few years ago, Matt Damon dropped a big bombshell on his career: he refused Avatar. Before the original 2009 film became the highest-grossing film of all time, James Cameron offered the actor a spot with 10% of his earnings. When Damon refused, he unknowingly passed on a quarter of a billion dollars, which is actually more than any actor in history. Like Cameron Avatar following released in theaters, the filmmaker reacted to all this.
When James Cameron was asked if he had spoken to Matt Damon recently, he burst out laughing. Then he said this:
That’s right. Matt Damon is doing great even though he did miss out on $250 million. During an interview with BBC radioJames Cameron spoke to the actor about having to decline due to his commitment to the Thick headed movies. Besides, how could he have known how Avatar was going to be, except for good…James Cameron, the man behind the terminator movies and Titanic.
Cameron was then asked if he would consider Matt Damon now for a role in a Avatar sequel, perhaps with a cameo to nod to the savage “what if” of Hollywood. In the words of the filmmaker:
Guess we’ll have to watch out for Matt Damon in the next one. Avatar movies, although nothing has changed regarding his loss of the biggest payday ever offered to an actor. When Damon revealed his lack Avatar opportunity, he shared John Krasinski’s wise response to it all. He reportedly comforted Damon by saying ‘nothing would be different’ in his life except they would both converse in space. And, of course, there is the “more money, more problems” of all that.
When Avatar became the highest-grossing film of all time, it actually overthrew Cameron’s other big hit, Titanic. marvel’s Avengers: Endgame knocked him down in 2019, until a spontaneous decision leads to Avatar regain its place of number 1 again when it is reissued in 2021. AvatarThe massive figure that puts it on top of any other movie in history is $2.922 billion worldwide.
Looking at the Avatar following, The way of the water made a $17 million opening night and is on course for an anticipated $170 million debut weekend in domestic markets. As you check out Pandora this weekend, check out CinemaBlend’s own Avatar 2 interview with james cameron.
