September is always an important month for Apple fans. Usually, new iPhones are introduced this month, as well as new Apple Watches. This year, that means the iPhone 14 and Apple Watch Series 8 lineup, the updated Apple Watch SE, and the all-new Apple Watch Pro.
This is also the time when new operating systems begin to exit their beta cycles and become generally available. We’ll get iOS 16 and watchOS 9, but iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura probably won’t arrive until October.
Of course, there are the usual service updates too – weekly releases for Apple TV+ and Apple Arcade – and there’s always a chance that Apple will introduce some other new products at its Far Out event on September 7th. So take a deep breath and check out everything we have in store for September.
Far away event
Apple’s biggest product is the iPhone, so its biggest launch this year is the iPhone 14. We’re expecting four models at this year’s Far Out event: regular models and Pro models in both standard and max sizes. The Pro is poised to be a big star with a new always-on display, big camera improvements and a new A16 processor, but the new bigger iPhone 14 Max is sure to be a popular choice. You can find out everything we think we know about the iPhone 14 in our preview.
New Apple Watches always accompany new iPhones. This year’s model (Apple Watch Series 8) isn’t expected to be a big departure, but the new temperature sensor should be a welcome addition. We think Apple may also introduce a new Apple Watch SE for the budget conscious. The biggest rumor about the Apple Watch – literally – is the Apple Watch Pro, which is expected to feature a new design, larger display, tougher case, and larger battery than the Series 8.
Apple has plenty of other hardware available and could announce the second generation AirPods Pro or other device at the event. But October will also likely see a second fall event, so don’t expect new Macs or iPads at the event.
Applications and software updates
It’s finally time for some of Apple’s big fall operating system updates to move out of beta and be available to everyone. While iOS, tvOS, and watchOS will be released in September, iPadOS has been delayed until October, and macOS Ventura is likely to release around the same time. Beta versions for these two will continue for a month.
iOS 16.0: iOS 16 brings some really great new features and we expect the final version to be released shortly before the release of the new iPhones on the 2nd week of September.
Watch OS 9.0: watchOS 9 has improved sleep tracking, fitness, and watch faces. It should launch with iOS 16.0.
TVOS 16.0: While tvOS 16 doesn’t offer many new features, it will still be updated this fall to match Apple’s other operating systems. It will likely launch alongside iOS and watchOS.
iPadOS 16.1 Beta: Apple is going to skip the release of iPadOS 16.0 and will instead release the first version of 16.1 later this fall (think October). This is already the version number of the latest beta that will run for a month. Much attention is being paid to improving the new Stage Manager multitasking feature.
macOS 13 Ventura Beta: Key features of macOS 13 include the Continuity Camera, new Weather and Clock apps, Scene Manager, and many app updates. The latest release of macOS often lags behind iOS, and the last few releases were released in October or November. Since Stage Manager is also a macOS feature, changes made to the iPadOS version should be reflected here. What’s more, macOS Ventura has big issues with the System Preferences app.
