Instagram followings got off to a bit of a slow start. We first heard about it over two years ago, when the company confirmed it was working on what was then known as exclusive stories.

Instagram has confirmed its work on the feature, although the company declined to share specific details about its plans.
Later that year, we learned that it was for Instagram subscriptions, with a range of price points from $0.99 to $4.99 per month. Testing followed early last year and it finally launched in the US just over a year ago.
Rolling out to 10 more countries
Parent company Meta has now announcement that Instagram subscriptions are deployed in the following countries:
- The United Kingdom
The rollout will be gradual, over the next few weeks, with more countries promised “in the coming months”.
Instagram Follower Features
- Subscriber Posts, Stories, Reels, and Lives:You can create reels, posts, and stories just for your followers. Share exclusive content, use interactive story stickers, or even go live with your paying subscribers only.
- Highlights for subscribers: Your latest exclusive stories will be automatically saved in a highlight that is only visible to subscribers so they never miss a story.
- Distribution of subscribers and social channels: You can give your subscribers special access or information about subscriber-only channels.
- Subscriber badges: You’ll see a follower badge next to comments and messages your followers send so you can easily identify and prioritize interactions with them.
- Subscriber chats. You can offer limited chats to subscribers.
The company says the feature will be available to “eligible creators,” but there’s no word on YouTube-style engagement metrics you need to hit. From the company guide instead focuses on adhering to monetization policies, which primarily focus on adhering to existing community guidelines, such as avoiding hate speech and refraining from using sketchy tactics to increase or inflate viewing.
There are four prohibited categories:
- Disinformation: content that has been found to be false by a third-party fact checker
- Misleading medical information: content containing medical claims that have been refuted by an expert organization
- Drugs: content of illegal substances, nicotine, pharmaceuticals
- Non-original content: content that is reproduced without making significant improvements.
Videos must also be, well, real videos with six prohibited formats:
- Static videos
- Static Image Polls
- Image slideshows
- Loop videos
- Text montages
- Embedded ads
Any form of engagement baiting, such as the use of giveaways to encourage subscriptions or comments/likes, is also prohibited.
