Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan could be charged with treason in the Cypher case, Geo news reported citing Defense Minister Asif Khawaja. The minister said the gate of encryption and subsequent charges could result in the disqualification of the leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) from holding public office in the future because he “used diplomatic encryption for political purposes and he could be charged with treason for using the classified document for personal gain.
In the Cypher case, Imran Khan is accused of using secret Pakistani information for political and personal gain.
Article 6 can be imposed on the leader of the PTI, Asif Khwaja said referring to the law which deals with high treason under which a defendant can be sentenced to death and life imprisonment.
Earlier on Thursday, Imran Khan called the renewed encryption controversy an attempt to disqualify him from running for office in the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM)-led government.
Virtually addressing his supporters, the PTI leader accused Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Asif Ali Zardari and others of plotting to remove him from the political arena, Geo News reported.
Moreover, on Thursday, Justice Minister Azam Khan said the PTI leader could face a sentence of up to 14 years for using the diplomatic cipher for political purposes.
On Wednesday, Pakistani Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said the government would initiate criminal charges against Imran Khan for revealing official secrets. The 70-year-old former cricketing hero lost power in a vote of no confidence in April 2022. Imran Khan held up a piece of paper at a public rally shortly after his dismissal saying he had a copy of a secret diplomatic letter, which spoke of dire consequences if he continued to move closer to Russia.
