Latest World News: "Imran Khan Guilty of Orchestrating May 9 Attacks"

Imran Khan appeared in court under tight security.

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has been found “guilty of inciting attacks” on military installations, including the house of the corps commander in Lahore, the government prosecutor told a terrorism court on Friday.

However, ATC Lahore has extended until August 8 Imran Khan’s pre-arrest bail in five terrorism cases.

“A special prosecutor told ATC on Friday that a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) of Punjab Police has completed its investigation into the May 9 attacks on military and public buildings and found Imran Khan guilty of aiding and abetting and other terrorism charges,” a court official told PTI.

Mr Khan appeared in court under tight security.

Prosecutor Farhad Ali Shah said Mr Khan was guilty of orchestrating the May 9 attacks and that his arrest was necessary to gather evidence.

He said Pakistani leader Tehreek-e-Insaf campaigned and incited party workers against the military before the May 9 attacks. This incitement led to the attack on military installations, he said.

ATC Judge Abher Gul Khan extended Mr. Khan’s pre-arrest bail until August 8 and ordered the prosecutor to present more arguments at the next hearing.

Following Imran Khan’s arrest by para-military Rangers, unrest broke out in Pakistan on May 9 which saw the burning and vandalism of dozens of military and public buildings, including the army headquarters in Rawalpindi and the ISI building in Faisalabad.

Police have arrested over 10,000 PTI workers and over 100 are on trial under the Army Act.

Mr Khan denied orchestrating or inciting the attacks, saying it was a well-planned plot to oust his party from the upcoming elections.

The military establishment managed to carve out two political parties – the Istekham-i-Pakistan Party and the PTI Parliamentarians – from the PTI as dozens of its leaders joined the new parties.
