Directly from the successful romance hit Sit Ramam, Dulquer Salman jumps into Balki’s Thriller Chup: The Artist’s Revenge.

“Sunny Deol on screen is this loud and angry person. But in real life he is the sweetest, calmest and quietest person you will ever meet with a beautiful aura and energy. Pooja Ma’am is a complete riot. She throws out all these amazing magical goodies that come out of her mouth. You can choose these at random and think about it. It gets your brain working,” says Dulquer Rediff.com contributor Mohnish Singh.

Do you remember reading a really bad review of one of your films?

I got this question many times.

I do not remember. I fade out or maybe it’s not something to dwell on.

But I don’t think the critics were very displeased with my films.

Also, I’m an actor who is constantly figuring out what I did wrong because I have far more faith in my filmmakers and my writers than I do as an actor.

Even when I read reviews, I always ask myself, “Where did I fail myself? How can I improve? Where did I get the sign wrong?’

But as for the film critics, they can carry out personal attacks, they can have a personal agenda, they can insult you personally, but I don’t think they can ever tell us anything about our films that we don’t already know.

I truly believe that when we make a film, we all go in with a certain film in mind.

You listen to a script like you read a book and you have a movie in your head.

In the same way, when I read a script, I have a movie in mind and I hope that the filmmaker is looking at the same movie in his mind.

If it doesn’t fit, something is wrong.

How important do you think reviews and film critics are in these times, especially when you have social media where everyone is a critic?

I think they should be more relevant now because as you said everyone with a phone is a film critic and films are the easiest art form to criticize because you don’t have to go to a film appreciation course or anything like that to do that to learn.

It’s so easy to consume. It is an image and sound medium.

But if you tell those same people with these cell phones to review a painting or a poem, they won’t be able to do it. Even I find it difficult to understand. It takes study to understand.

That’s why it’s even more important now that our reviewers and critics give genuine reviews, balanced reviews, and with love for cinema and with a certain kindness, to help us all improve and be part of better cinema.

You see, a viewer can have personal issues.

Someone can’t like me as an actor for whatever reason.

Maybe he doesn’t like the fact that I was born from my father (Malayalam superstar Mammootty), maybe he doesn’t like that I had a very privileged life and a very privileged upbringing.

Or maybe he thinks there are other better actors that can do this movie.

He may not like every film I do, but that doesn’t mean my film deserves hate because 300-400 people worked on this film.

Do you read reviews and follow the box office numbers?

i read everything

But I’m the person who ignores a hundred good things said about me and focuses on these three bad things.

My whole family knows that about me.

If I walk around the house with a withered face after discharge, they will say: “What have you read? Stop reading.’

I think I get some kind of drive from that.

I think if people kept praising me I would probably think I’m great at what I do.

I think these critics and haters are what push me to push myself as an actor, to push myself to make a different kind of cinema.
