Rumors have been circulating for some time that the launch of the iPhone 14 Pro this fall will finally see Apple’s smartphone line get the always-on screen feature that has been available on Android for years. But opening wallpapers in iOS 16 means we now know how the feature will behave, and it looks like Apple is taking it up a notch.
After reviewing the internal files of iOS 16 Beta 4, 9to5Mac was able to recreate a way to switch wallpapers between normal and sleep mode on the iPhone 14 Pro. While Android devices with always-on displays tend to turn off idle wallpapers completely and display a black background, the 14 Pro will do something more fun and much more Apple-like.
As is the case with many of the watch faces available on the Apple Watch (which gained permanent functionality with the launch of the Series 5 in 2019), it looks like Apple will painstakingly create its own sleeping versions of each wallpaper with muted colors and lower brightness so that they consume less energy. There will also be fewer animations and elements on the screen: perhaps only a clock and a few widgets.

Of course, the vibrant colors and icons of your regular lock screen or home screen will return the moment you tap the screen or press the power button, as they do on the Apple Watch.
While this behavior was discovered in iOS 16, it’s worth reiterating that it won’t be available for many modern devices that will be able to install this operating system. The always-on display feature is one of several new features that will be exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max; even the new iPhone 14 will be excluded.
