Kozhikode, Kannur and Wayanad district collectors on Monday declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including vocational colleges and Anganwadis, due to heavy rains.
However, the leave does not apply to pre-scheduled exams. A yellow alert has been declared in the two districts besides Kannur, Malappuram and Kasaragod in the coming days during which intermittent heavy downpours are expected.
The Kozhikode collector asked parents to ensure that children stay indoors during the holidays and refrain from approaching water sources.
Meanwhile, heavy rains hit the mountainous areas of Kozhikode on Sunday. Two children were killed in Thamarassery after falling into a pit filled with water. Ajil, 11, and Hadir, 7, sons of Abdul Jaleel from Vattakkurru, were found in the pit during a search by local residents after they failed to return from school. They were rushed to hospital but could not be saved.
Three houses were damaged in Meppayur and Nadapuram when trees fell on them. A dug well near Kuttiyady. The Iruvazhinji, Poonoor and Cherupuzha rivers swelled. The Karasseri-Vallathaipara bridge over Cherupuzha was submerged.
A car carrying Tamil Nadu forest department officials skidded and fell into a canal near Puthoorvayal in Wayanad. Both passengers escaped uninjured. The Periya River has swelled as a result of which several rice fields remain waterlogged.
A two-storey building under construction collapsed at Kolayad in Kannur. Two houses were partially damaged in Kanichar and Kelakam.
Meanwhile, the Kasaragod district collector has asked people living on the banks of the Mogral, Neeleshwaram and Karyankode rivers to remain vigilant as the water level there has risen.
