An official recording of the cult classic Heathers: The Musical – based on a 1988 cult classic film Heathers – will premiere on the Roku Channel on September 16.

Like the original film, the musical follows a regular high schooler, Veronica Sawyer (originally played by Winona Ryder), who gets dragged into the popular girl group – three vicious and beautiful college students, all named Heather. She resents their cruelty, but at their school it’s either about joining the popular clique or getting eaten away alive. Enter JD (originally played by Christian Slater), a mysterious new student with a rebellious streak, who inspires him to shake things up. It’s all a teenage dream, until JD decides to murder the most popular Heather and present it as a suicide. It eventually escalates into a series of murder-qualified-suicides, and Veronica must find a way to end JD’s misanthropic spree.

The musical had an off-Broadway tour in 2014 and an off-West End tour in 2018, before a UK tour in 2021. But even with the limited print runs, the soundtrack has garnered plenty of fans (even when only a few songs were available on popular streaming services). Excerpts from the songs have became popular on TikTok, fans made animations for YouTube (and also did some cross videos with other fandoms), and Riverdale even made a musical episode centered on Heathers.

Finally, fans will be able to watch an official recording (but not with the original cast). The first trailer showcases some of the musical’s most memorable songs and moments, and of course, those iconic croquet outfits. Heathers: The Musical incidentally premieres the same day as Netflix Revengea dark comedy that definitely draws inspiration from the original Heathers.
