Latest Kerala Local News: Forceps left inside a Kerala woman’s stomach during a power surge

Kozhikode, Kerala

A Kerala Police investigation has revealed forceps were accidentally left in a woman’s stomach after surgery due to alleged medical negligence by doctors at a government medical college here.

Police opened the investigation following a complaint from the woman alleging she faced health complications after undergoing a Caesarean section at Government Medical College Hospital here in 2017.

A senior police officer said on Monday the investigation confirmed that the clamps had been accidentally left inside the woman’s body after the C-section, which was an alleged act of negligence on the part of the doctors.

“We have completed the investigation. We have submitted a report to the DMO to form a medical board to conduct further investigation,” the police chief told PTI.

Harshinia, Kozhikode’s 30-year-old wife, filed the lawsuit requesting an investigation in October last year.

The woman had undergone her third C-section at the Medical College in November 2017, with her first two C-sections having been performed at different private hospitals.

On September 17, 2022, doctors at Kozhikode Medical College performed major surgery on Harshinia, who was in severe pain, to remove a mosquito-repellent artery clamp that had been in her stomach for five years.

The mosquito artery clamp is a scissor-like piece of equipment used by surgeons to clamp bleeding vessels during surgical procedures.

Medical school officials initially denied any negligence, citing his previous C-sections at private hospitals. However, the police findings prompted authorities to set up a medical board for further investigation.

The woman has been protesting medical school officials for two months, demanding justice for the incident.

Today she said she was satisfied with the police investigation as it validated her claims of negligence.

The government had earlier announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh for her.
