What’s in a surname? All of Apple’s product lines have some mix of Air and Pro and now Max and Studio, each offering a different experience depending on what you buy. We will help you figure it out and distinguish one Pro from another Max.
Mini
For the most part, mini seems smaller in Apple terminology, both literally and in terms of performance. Apple is selling three mini-family products.
iphone 13 mini
How much is it: 699-1029 USD
What does it mean: Small display, average performance and performance
iPhone 13 mini is a smaller version of iPhone 13 with the same processor, camera, and specs (except battery). It has a 5.4-inch display versus 6.1 inches on the iPhone 13 and a slightly smaller battery, but otherwise mini here means what you’d expect: smaller.
iPad mini
How much is it: $499-$799
What does it mean: Small display, average performance and performance
The iPad mini is essentially a smaller version of the iPad Air with one exception: it has the iPhone’s A15 processor, while the iPad Air has the same powerful M1 processor as the Mac and iPad Pro. The iPad mini has an 8.3-inch display (versus the Air’s 10.9-inch), but everything else remains the same: 12-megapixel cameras, a USB-C port, 5G networking, and support for the 2nd generation Apple Pencil.
Mac mini
How much is it: $699-2099
What does it mean: Small size, entry to mid-level performance
Mac mini is Apple’s smallest desktop Mac, at about a third of the height of Mac Studio. It has an M1 processor (compared to the much more powerful M1 Max and M1 Ultra) and costs about a third of the price. The highest-end Mac mini (which we don’t recommend buying until it gets the Apple Silicon update) costs almost the same as the entry-level Studio, so they match almost perfectly.
Air
Apple’s use of the Air name is a little confusing. The MacBook Air is definitely entry-level, but the iPad Air is clearly mid-range. And while the MacBook Air is the lightest Mac laptop you can buy, the iPad Air isn’t much lighter than the iPad and 11-inch iPad Pro.
iPad Air
How much is it: $599-$899
What does it mean: High-range performance and mid-range performance
At $599, the iPad Air costs a little more than the most budget-friendly iPad, which starts at $329. But you get a lot more for your money: Liquid Retina display, M1 processor, Apple Pencil 2 support, sub-6GHz 5G, USB-C, and a host of colors: space gray, pink, purple, starry and blue.

Macbook Air
How much is it: $999–2049
What does it mean: entry-level performance
The Air has been a mainstay in Apple’s laptop lineup since its dramatic introduction in January 2008, but Apple hasn’t made any major improvements to the MacBook Air since 2018, when it got a redesign and a Retina display. Although it started out as a higher-end machine, the current model is $999 with an M1 processor, 256GB of memory, a Magic Keyboard, and a huge battery life.
Pro
Pro is the most confusing name in Apple parlance. This clearly means better, and sometimes better, but not all Pro devices are created equal. The iPhone Pro and AirPods Pro are relatively affordable upgrades compared to their non-professional compatriots, but the 12.9-inch iPad Pro is quite pricey, and the Mac Pro and Pro Display XDR are out of reach for most people. And the 13-inch MacBook Pro is essentially an Air compared to the 14-inch and 16-inch models.
M1 Pro
How much is it: $1,999 – $5,299
What does it mean: Average performance
In December 2020, Apple began the transition to its own processors with the M1 chip. Less than a year later, the exponentially faster M1 Pro was announced for the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro, delivering almost twice the speed of the M1. It’s currently only available on the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro, but we expect it to come to the Mac mini as well.
AirPods Pro
How much is it: $249
What does it mean: High-end design and features
AirPods Pro are one of three different types of AirPods that Apple sells, but they stand apart. Unlike cheaper AirPods, the AirPods Pro offer Active Noise Cancellation with Transparency Mode and a more secure fit than regular AirPods thanks to the use of silicone eartips.
iphone 13 pro
How much is it: $999 – $1499
What does it mean: High quality features
Apple introduced its iPhone Pro line with the iPhone 11, and each model had the same differences: better camera, better screen, stainless steel finish, and a larger 6.7-inch “Max” variant. The latest iPhone 13 Pro finally brings the smooth ProMotion style to iPhone, along with a slightly better A15 processor with 5-core GPU, improved battery life, and an upgraded camera system. You also get a variety of colors available in Sierra Blue, Silver, Graphite and Gold.
iPad Pro
How much is it: US$799–1999
What does it mean: High performance and features
While there are two iPad Pro sizes, the 12.9-inch model is the more “professional” of the two. The 11-inch model has a Liquid Retina display similar to the iPad Air (but with the addition of ProMotion), but the 12.9-inch model has a Liquid Retina XDR display that uses mini-LED backlighting for greater brightness and clarity. excellent color accuracy. Otherwise, the iPad Pro is very similar to the iPad Air, with some minor improvements: mmWave 5G, more RAM and storage, and a Thunderbolt 3 port.
Macbook Pro
How much is it: $1299–$6099
What does it mean: Medium to high performance
The MacBook Pro family offers a wide range of prices, performance and features. At the bottom end is the 13-inch MacBook Pro with M1 processor starting at $1,299, while at the top end is the 16-inch MacBook Pro with Liquid Retina XDR display and M1 Pro processor starting at $2,499, nearly double that amount. . The difference between the 13-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro is so big that it’s hard to see how they both share the same last name.

Mac Pro
How much is it: $4,999 – $52,199
What does it mean: Ultra High Performance
The Apple Workstation has not received significant updates since 2019 and is still starting at $5,999. It’s certainly a powerful machine with a 28-core Intel Xeon W processor, up to 1.5TB of DDR4 ECC memory in 12 DIMM slots, and very high-end graphics options. It’s also Apple’s only modular Mac with eight available PCIe slots. It’s slower than some silicon-based Apple computers, but much more expandable and appealing to demanding professional users.
Professional XDR Display
How much is it: $4,999 – $6,998
What does it mean: Ultra High Performance
Actually, Pro is the first name for the display, but it’s no less premium than the Mac Pro. Pro Display XDR is a 32″ Retina 6K display (6016×3384 resolution, 1000 nits sustained brightness and 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio) that starts at the highest level of 32″ monitors available, and that’s before even you add expensive options like a $1,000 nanotexture glass, a $999 Pro stand, or a $199 VESA mount.
Maximum
For the most part, Max means more – more cores, fuller sound, bigger screen.
M1 Max.
How much is it: 1999–6099 USD
What does it mean: High performance
The M1 Max, which was announced at the same time as the M1 Pro in October, has a GPU that is four times faster than the M1 GPU. The chip supports up to 64GB of combined memory and has twice the memory bandwidth of the M1 Pro and six times the memory bandwidth of the M1, up to 400GB/s. Learn more about our predictions for the future of Apple’s chips to get an idea of what’s going to happen in the next few years.
AirPods Max
How much is it: $549
What does it mean: High-end design and features
Apple’s high-end full-size wireless headphones with active noise cancellation and premium design are expensive. They’re also heavy at 384 grams compared to the significantly lighter 4-gram AirPods and AirPods Pro. Also, AirPods Max lack a 3.5mm input jack, so you’ll have to splurge on a 3.5mm Lightning cable if you want to enjoy them without Bluetooth lag.
iPhone 13 Pro Max
How much is it: US$1099–1599
What does it mean: Large display, high performance
A rare product with two surnames, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is exactly what its name suggests: a bigger version of the iPhone 13 Pro. With a 6.7-inch display versus 6.1-inch, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is for people who want a bigger and better display, a better camera, and longer battery life. While Apple has been adding extra features to the Max in previous years, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is simply bigger.
Studio
Studio, resurrected under the old name, now stands for the highest quality without breaking your budget.
Studio Mac
How much is it: 1999–7999 USD
What does it mean: High performance
The compact Mac Studio was announced in two standard configurations during Apple’s March “Peek Performance” event: a $1999 model with an M1 Max (10-core CPU), 24-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine, 32GB of RAM, and 512 GB SSD. ; and a $3,999 version with M1 Ultra (20-core CPU), 48-core GPU, 32-core Neural Engine, 64GB RAM, and 1TB SSD. It’s significantly cheaper than the Mac Pro, but thanks to Apple’s silicon, it’s as fast as multi-core Xeon W processors, but cheaper. Apple is reportedly working on a new Mac Pro with Apple silicon, but for now, Studio is the new Pro, at least when it comes to desktop Macs.

studio display
How much is it: 1599–2299 USD
What does it mean: Average performance
The 27-inch Apple Studio Display is a more affordable version of the Pro Display XDR, but like the Mac Studio, it’s still not cheap. It’s powered by an A13 Bionic processor and runs iOS to power its 12MP Center Stage-enabled webcam. There are also six built-in speakers with Spatial Audio support when using Dolby Atmos, and the same nano-textured glass as its ultra-high-end sibling.
Ultra
Apple only has one Ultra product, but it’s the fastest and most expensive chip it makes.
M1 Ultra
How much is it: $3999–$7999
What does it mean: Top performance
And now the M1 Ultra has a new name, which is a dual-chip Max configuration with a total bandwidth of 2.5TB/s in the highest Mac Studio configuration. We don’t know if the Ultra name will be used in other products – perhaps the Mac Ultra – but if so, you can expect it to be the best flagship.
