Thamarassery: The prime suspect, a hired jerk, in the Thamarassery expatriate kidnapping case has been arrested by Wayanad police. On the night of April 7, expatriate Muhammad Shafi was forcibly taken to his home in Parappanpoyil. His wife was also taken away but later abandoned on a highway.

10 days later, after extensive searches, Shafi was found in Karnataka. It was suspected that financial transactions were behind the kidnapping. The kidnappers had freed Shafi after holding him captive for 10 days.

The investigative team arrested the main defendant, Mohammad Shameer alias Aadu Shamir from Kasaragod at a private compound in Kalpetta. The culprit is already a history soap opera with attempted murder cases filed against him.

Shameer, along with four other people, was trying to escape in a car when Thamarasserry investigators grabbed him. Among those who rushed upon seeing the police was Sajid, a native of Kondotty, who was arrested and later handed over to Kalpetta police. Others managed to escape.

The rental car they were traveling in was seized. A bullet and an explosive device were found there. These were also transferred to Kalpetta Police custody. The task force led by Thamarassery DYSP included SI Rajeev Babu, Biju Pukkottu, SCPO Jayarajan, CPO’s Shaijal, Ajeesh Raj, Vishnu Prasad among others.

The culprit was captured on Friday and taken to Thamarassery station at 8 p.m. The investigative team said that in his confession, Shameer disclosed that he took over the citation at the request of Monayi, a native of Ernakulam who deals in hawala and gold smuggling in the Gulf.

The citation was accepted and implemented after his return from Oman. After learning of the ongoing investigation, Shameer and his partner in crime Iqbal alias Ikku fled to Oman via Delhi-Nepal.

Shameer returned from Oman three days ago and was staying with a friend in Kondotty and reached Wayanad on Thursday evening. Friday evening, he came to the station with a friend and some acquaintances.

Police reached the resort on the basis of a tip-off. Shameer’s acquaintances attempted to free him from the investigative team’s grasp and he could only be captured after applying force.

With Shameer’s arrest, the number of defendants arrested in the kidnapping case rose to eight.
