Residents of Edappally and Ponekkara Divisions of Kochi Corporation staged a protest outside the Kerala Water Authority office in Kaloor on Monday demanding immediate action to restore the supply of clean water which was interrupted almost two weeks ago.
The protest was led by Deepa Varma, a councilor representing the Edappally division. It was canceled after officials assured them that the water supply would be restored in two days. We will come back to the office if the promise is not kept because the inhabitants have no choice but to continue the demonstration, she declared.
Water supply was affected following maintenance work along the main Palarivattom pipeline on July 14. Although the KWA authorities claimed that the supply would return to normal in two days, the situation worsened. Ms Deepa pointed out that the water supply along several roads in the division has been completely disrupted, forcing residents to rely on water tankers. Most of them had to spend 1,000 to 2,000 for a shipment and could not bear the expense given the disproportionate delay in restoring supplies, she said.
KWA officials said they had asked higher authorities to take action to increase the pressure along the main line as part of efforts to deliver clean water in the same flow as received two weeks ago.
