Latest World News: Countries summon Swedish ambassadors to protest Quran burning

The condemnations and moves came following a protest in Stockholm on Thursday where protesters kicked and partially damaged a book they called a Quran.

Swedish ambassadors have been summoned to various countries following a second event organized to desecrate the Quran, Islam’s holy book, which was held in Sweden.

The condemnations and moves came following a protest in Stockholm on Thursday where protesters kicked and partially damaged a book they called a Quran.

The Stockholm protesters did not burn the Koran as they had initially threatened to do, but the event still sparked action from several Muslim-majority countries.

Earlier Thursday, the Swedish embassy in central Baghdad was set on fire.

The event in Stockholm was planned by Salwan Momika, a 37-year-old Christian Iraqi refugee in Sweden, who also burned pages from a Koran on June 28.

Here are some of the reactions in response to the latest events:

Iraq on Thursday expelled Sweden’s ambassador to the country. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani also recalled his country’s charge d’affaires to Sweden and suspended Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson’s work permit on Iraqi soil.

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry also condemned the attack on the Swedish embassy and said it would sever diplomatic relations with Sweden if such an incident were to happen again.

Qatar summoned the Swedish ambassador early on Friday, handing him a note of protest over the events in Stockholm.

The Qatari Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the Swedish authorities should take all necessary measures to put an end to these shameful acts.

Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia summoned the Swedish charge d’affaires to Riyadh and handed him a note of protest.

Hezbollah in Lebanon

The leader of the Lebanese Hezbollah movement, Hassan Nasrallah, has called on Arab and Muslim countries to follow in Iraq’s footsteps and expel Swedish ambassadors from their country.

He also called for demonstrations after Friday prayers, saying the whole world must see how we adopt our Quran, and the whole world must see how we protect our Quran with our blood.

Turkey condemned it as a despicable attack and called on Sweden to take decisive action to prevent this hate crime against Islam.

We strongly condemn the despicable attack targeting our holy book, a Foreign Ministry statement said.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry summoned Sweden’s ambassador to Tehran on Thursday to vigorously protest the desecration of the Holy Quran, state media reported.

Demonstrations are planned across the country after Friday prayers.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian also wrote a letter to the UN Secretary General about the incident.

The Kingdom of Jordan has condemned the desecration of the Koran in Stockholm as a reckless act that fuels hatred and a manifestation of Islamophobia that incites violence and insult to religions, its foreign ministry said on Thursday.
