Latest Kerala Local News: “Can rise in the party hierarchy with small favors”:

Alappuzha: Despite the best efforts of the party’s state secretary to resurrect the crisis-stricken CPM in Alappuzha, the party’s regional unity continues to be a concern for the state leadership, with another complaint of female harassment arising.

In the latest development, a party employee accused a regional committee member of harassing her. However, we learn that the district committee refused to accept his complaint. Now, the survivor, from the district’s coastal belt, is considering approaching state leadership with her complaint.

Sources said the accused, a retired government employee, was in charge of a regional committee which included coastal villages.

In her complaint, the woman accused the leader of asking her to favor him in order to reach higher positions within the party hierarchy. The chief also reportedly expressed his willingness to meet her privately and also told her to alert him when her husband was not home.

As she approached the district leadership with a complaint, a senior leader refused to accept her complaint and asked her to return immediately. She has not yet lodged a complaint with the police because she wants to seek a solution in the party forum itself.

CPI(M) District Secretary R Nasar was not available for comment by phone.

The episode served as yet another jolt to the CPI(M) in Alappuzha, which has been hit hard by factionalism among senior leaders and allegations of corruption and even tobacco smuggling.

Recently, the party launched an organizational overhaul to address growing discontent among grassroots party workers against the district leadership. Based on the findings of a two-member committee comprising party state secretariat members TP Ramakrishnan and PK Biju, the party recently demoted P Chitharanjan MLA from the district secretariat to the district committee and formally reprimanded 25 other leaders, including district committee members.

The committees of Haripad, Alappuzha North and Alappuzha South regions were dissolved and replaced by ad hoc committees while the Alappuzha North and Alappuzha South committees were merged into one. The party also expelled A Shanavas, a CPM strongman and Alappuzha Municipal Councilor, for his alleged links to a tobacco smuggling racket.
