Latest Kerala Local News: Calicut University celebrates its 55th anniversary
Marking a milestone in its turbulent history, the University of Calicut celebrated its 55e birthday on Sunday.
The institution came into being on July 23, 1968, under the seven-party coalition government led by the late EMS Namboodiripad. As Minister of Education in the Cabinet, the late CH Mohammed Koya had played a major role in its formation.
Speaking to students and staff through Radio CU, the campus radio service, Vice Chancellor MK Jayaraj said the university was established to address the educational backwardness of the Malabar region. He claimed that he has accomplished most of the goals such as ensuring higher education for people here.
Mr. Jayaraj pointed out that the University of Calicut was the largest such institution in the state.
There are 426 affiliated colleges and about 3 lakh students in the regular and distance learning mode. The university campus has 36 teaching departments, he said. One of the major achievements of recent times has been an A Plus rating from the National Board of Assessment and Accreditation. Its performance in the National Institute Ranking Framework has also improved.
Mr. Jayaraj said the university was implementing new plans for its academic growth, which included four-year undergraduate courses that would be launched from the next academic year. New foreign language courses such as German are launched. Five integrated postgraduate programs have already been launched on the university campus. Work on the new university block, which will ensure adequate infrastructure for new projects, will begin this year, he added. University sources said they planned to hold another event, which would be attended by ministers, to mark the anniversary next month.
