Latest Technology News: Budget buds sing loud! OnePlus Nord Buds 2r review – Business
When OnePlus launched the Nord Buds 2 in April 2023, I was sure they had hit the gold standard of affordable audio. The device was so well balanced between features and price that it was a tough act to follow. However, alongside the new OnePlus Nord 3 smartphone, the company also announced its budget buds – the OnePlus Nord Buds 2r. I’ve been hooked up for a few weeks and here’s how it goes.
Nestled in a pill-shaped case, the OnePlus Nord Buds 2r sports a similar design to its predecessors. The buds are quite lightweight and stay comfortably in the ear for long periods of time. The unit I received is plain grey, although there is also a nicer and brighter blue version.
The OnePlus Nord Buds 2r controls continue to be soft-touch based. The controls are pretty intuitive – single taps to pause or resume playback, double tap to skip to the next song, and triple tap to go back to the previous track.

The OnePlus Nord Buds 2r features the same 12.4mm drivers as its slightly more expensive sibling. Across all genres, from Prated Kuhads Cold/Mess (Indian Indie) to Walker Hayes Fancy Like (Country Music), the audio on the buds was well balanced. It’s only when I crank up the volume much higher that the acoustic percussion starts to sound a bit tinny. There’s no active noise cancellation on these buds. However, OnePlus claims to have integrated a wind noise reduction mechanism so that the user’s voice is heard clearly during calls. I’ve been told that my voice in calls and online meetings is clear enough when working from home. But most of the time, when I was on the road, going to the office in a taxi, I was told that my voice was not very clear.
While gaming, one can enable the Game Mode option to reduce gaming lag via Bluetooth. The app works for Nord Buds 2r only if you are on an Android smartphone, not iOS.
Although the setup was seamless, the re-pairing sometimes didn’t happen very seamlessly. More often than I wanted, I had to reconnect with a smartphone or tablet that I had used the headphones with before.

The OnePlus Nord Buds 2r offer decent battery life. I usually had it plugged in for an hour a day and easily spent a few weeks or more before needing to recharge the case. On a full charge, the case can power the headphones for 3-4 charge cycles. The buds have an IP55 rating, which means you’re good in case you get caught off guard by the occasional drizzle.
At this price, recommending the OnePlus Nord Buds 2r is almost a no-brainer, mainly due to the well-balanced acoustics and smooth touch controls it offers. You can take that into account, especially if you’re not looking for a pair of headphones without active noise cancellation.
