If you’re looking for a smart popcorn horror to watch with friends, this movie is quite an entertaining romp, recommends Mayur Sanap.

A group of young adults party at a friend’s remote villa on a stormy night.

With alcohol and drugs in abundance, they decide to play a crime game, Bodies Bodies Bodies.

Chaos ensues when one of them turns up dead and more bodies pile up.

With nowhere to go, the group becomes hostile while trying to figure out if the killer is one of them.

This group of not-so-likable teenagers has the shy, awkward (Maria Bakalova), the rich and naughty (Pete Davidson), a recovering drug addict (Amandla Stenberg), the enigmatic (Lee Pace), the boorish (Myha’la Herrold), a narcissist (Chase Sui Wonders) and a moron (Rachel Sennott).

It’s difficult to like someone, despite their premise of people in danger because they’re either evil, stupid, or just plain awful young adults.

The film feels generic at times, but the suspenseful setting surprises the viewer at times.

And all the while, it beats traditional horror beats with a claustrophobic setting and gory visuals that add to the suspense.

When the final twist is revealed and the “Who Did It?” in full effect, you’ll be amazed at the clever spelling.

In its 94 minutes running time, the film changes from horror to slasher to a crime thriller, but is thematically a dark comedy. This unexpected genre medley is what makes it stand out body body body such a fun ride.

There are some well-placed jump scares where you wouldn’t expect them.

As the group moves through the mansion, their mobile flashlights are used to create the sense of fear.

Blood is used abundantly: on the bodies, on the surface, over the walls.

The main flaw, however, is that you don’t care enough about the characters to care enough about them during the attempted resolution in the third act sections.

The film seems stretched and the long confrontation scenes are annoying.

The salvation are the performances.

Maria Bakalova, whom you may remember Borat Subsequent Moviefilm (2020), delivers as the introverted girl who hides secrets from her friend, played equally well by Amandla Stenberg.

The star actress is Rachel Sennott, who is hilarious as the unsuspecting girl who is most shocked by the events.

Social media punching bag Pete Davidson gets a chance to flex his comedic muscles and he shines through.
