Latest Technology News: Blizzard’s Diablo IV devs announce they will be patching the game

Three directors working on Diablo IV held a campfire live chat yesterday saying they’re going to change the way they deploy patches, after an incremental version 1.1.0 patch for the game that players abruptly nerfed (via IGN). And they promise that updates like this won’t happen in the future at least, not like it happened this week.

In the livestream, Associate Director Joe Piepiora, Game Director Joe Shely, and Community Leader Adam Fletcher acknowledged complaints about the patch, which significantly reduced player power for some builds. Fletcher said of the cut that, we know it’s bad, we know it’s no fun, and added that we never plan on doing a patch like this again.

In the short term, there is at least one quick fix coming to rebalance things after patch 1.1.0. Piepiora said that the team felt the game’s nightmare dungeons were significantly outdated, and level 100 nightmare dungeons were excruciatingly difficult for most classes, requiring players to pursue very specific builds.

That was never the intention, Piepiora said, and the team plans to lower the difficulty of these level 100 dungeons by around 30% later today via a hotfix to balance things out. In other words, it won’t restore player power to previous levels, but will make the game world a little more manageable.

Shely said a patch in version 1.1.1 will balance things out more, among other changes, adding more monsters to nightmare dungeons and certain Helltide events, so higher level players can have fun mowing down monsters as they pass through them. In its next Campfire Chat, scheduled for Friday, July 28, Blizzard will talk more about this patch, which Fletcher says will be released in a few weeks.

Shely said the team is changing the way it approaches game balance updates, especially those related to lowering player power, saying they will no longer do so without providing compelling alternatives for players. Instead, the team will let these builds stay tame until they fit better into the overall changes. The team will also introduce these updates in a predictable manner, he said, like at the start of a new season.

Ahead of future patches, Fletcher said Blizzard will offer patch notes within a week of a post explaining the changes.
