Latest Technology News: Bing AI finally works on Google Chrome, but it’s still
The digital arena, dominated by giants like Google and Microsoft, is a breeding ground for competitive innovations, particularly in terms of artificial intelligence. This competition produced notable events like the advent of Bing’s AI chat on Android phones and the incident where Bing inaccurately generated an AI response for a Google Chrome search. Against this backdrop of rivalry and innovation, Microsoft has extended the availability of its Bing AI chat experience, powered by ChatGPT and previously only available on its Edge browser, to now include Google Chrome.
Previously, Bing’s AI chatbot was only accessible through the Microsoft Edge browser. As reported by 9to5Google, Microsoft extends this feature to Google Chrome. The integration is simple and intuitive, although it is still being rolled out. Once ready, users can access bing.comtap or click the “Chat” icon in the upper left corner of the screen, and the chatbot activates, merging seamlessly with standard search results.
It is important to note that there are some restrictions on the Bing AI experience on Google Chrome. The 4,000 character limit in Edge has been reduced to 2,000 characters per question. Additionally, the chat conversation resets in Chrome after five messages, unlike Edge’s more forgiving 30-message maximum. While not completely detrimental to the user experience, these limits can frustrate some people.
Microsoft has a habit of pushing users away from Google Chrome and into its own browser. Bing’s AI chat experience has notably been accused of generating promotional text for Bing features instead of responding to user-requested searches for “Chrome”. This deceptive practice drew criticism and damaged Bing’s reputation, as Microsoft positioned the chat feature as a competitor to AI experiences such as ChatGPT and Google Bard. Following the backlash, Microsoft disabled the feature, reiterating its commitment to experimenting with new features to improve the customer experience.
Despite its limitations and previous controversies, this development merges features of Bing and Chrome, and it’s a win for the end user. It’s still being rolled out – we don’t see the chatbot in Chrome yet on any of our accounts – but the Bing app for Android now has AI functionality if you’d like to try it out.
