Latest Kerala Local News: Authorization for the construction of 17 railway bridges; land acquisition

Kannur: The railway board has sanctioned the construction of 17 overpass bridges at the railway gates in the state. This is in addition to the 27 upper decks already approved for the Kerala Railway Development Corporation.

Southern Railways had applied for sanction of 96 overflights of which 36 were approved. 17 of them come under Kerala Division. Rs 701.5 crores is the estimated cost of this project.

The cost will be shared equally between the state government and the railroad. Although the railroad has given permission, it is still unclear who will take the job. Construction of Railway Over Bridge (ROB) / Railway Underground Bridge (RUB) costs between Rupees 25 and 35 crore. Each bridge will have two lanes and a sidewalk.

The trusted ROB location details are:

Hosangadi, Nileshwaram, Koyilandy-Elathur, Thalassery-Mahi (Two) in Malabar and Kollam-Thiruvananthapuram, Shoranur-Ernakulam, Shoranur-Nilambur, Ernakulam-Kayamkulam will have 17 ROBs.

In 2018, KRDSL was given the responsibility of constructing 27 ROBs at various state crossings. In 2019, the Cabinet approved the signing of a memorandum with the central government and the railways. The project stalled for two years.

On May 28, 2021, the state government and the Ministry of Railways signed a memorandum of understanding, but progress on the project is slow. The social impact studies have been completed. But acquiring land in many places has proven to be a challenge and that is why tenders have not been launched.

V Ajithkumar, MD of Kerala Railway Development Company said that out of the 27 approved projects, work is ongoing at Nilambur ROB. Tenders will be issued for the remainder once land acquisition is complete.
