Reflecting on the legacy of Oommen Chandy, Rahul Gandhi recounted working with the leader.

“Political leaders emerge from people, from people’s history, culture and relationships. In the same way, it’s quite easy for leaders in the 21st century to forget (where they came from). There are many pitfalls in the journey. You will get power, you can abuse it, you can get arrogant, you can be confused that you are bigger than people.

“A few months ago I was walking with the Bharat Jodo Yatra in Kerala. I knew that Chandy ji was not well. I also knew that he had a very dangerous disease. He called me and said that he wanted to walk in the Yatra. I told Mr. Venugopal that I did not want Chandy ji to come. Because it was dangerous for him. We should stop Yatra and meet him for five minutes, you may not have saw this because there was no TV. When he was walking with me, I tried to give him a hand to support him. And throughout the walk, he refused my support. He wanted to walk alone. While walking with him, I thought, what a great leader this man is,” Rahul said.

Addressing the meeting, LJD Chairman, MV Shreyams Kumar praised Oommen Chandy’s compassionate nature and how he devotedly helped people without harboring any animosity.
