If you thought your MacBook Pro had an incredible screen, wait until you try on the Apple AR Mixed Reality Headset for the first time. According to a new rumor, the headset will feature a large display with a 1.4-inch 4K screen in front of each eye.
Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants and a trusted source for information on display technologies, claims to have received final display specifications for the AR headset that will reportedly be released next week:
- Micro OLED
- 1.41 inches (diagonal)
- 4000 ppi
- Brightness over 5000 nits
To put it mildly, these are absurd characteristics. For reference, the PlayStation VR2 headset is equipped with a pair of displays with a resolution of 2000×2040 pixels and a pixel density of about 850 ppi. The maximum brightness of the latest HoloLens is 500 nits. In addition, none of the modern devices on the market uses Micro OLED, which has higher brightness and black level than mini LED. Presumably, the headset display will also support ProMotion with a refresh rate of 120Hz or higher.
Considering it’s just one aspect of the headset, and it’s a very high-end piece, the $3,000 price reports are probably accurate. Apple is clearly sparing no expense for the first generation of the Reality Pro headset.
Apple is expected to unveil the headset during its WWDC keynote on Monday, June 5th. You can watch it live at 10:00 pm ET.
