Latest World News: Americans would need a “visa” for Europe from 2024, check what
The European Union will implement the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) next year. It will require all travelers from visa-free countries, including the United States, to obtain travel authorization before departure.
Not a traditional visa, ETIAS will require an online application process with approval delivered via email. Travelers to Europe will need to complete an online form with biographical information, travel plans and travel history, as well as security questions. Most applicants will receive approval within the hour, but some may have to wait up to four days if their application requires additional verification.

ETIAS COST
Applicants will be required to pay $8, applicable to travelers of all ages. Once approved, the travel authorization will be valid for multiple entries over three years or until the traveler’s passport expires.

The new rule will be mandatory for all ETIAS member countries which have been divided into four categories: full Schengen members such as Spain, France and Italy; European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries such as Iceland, Norway and Switzerland; future Schengen members such as Bulgaria and Cyprus; as well as European microstates like Andorra and Monaco.
What does not change for American travelers in Europe?
In a relief for American travelers to Europe, the amount of time they can spend in Europe as a tourist does not change. The current rule that allows US passport holders to stay for up to 90 days in a 180-day period will remain. For any trip longer than 90 days, a special visa is required.
US citizens currently have visa-free access to 184 countries around the world, according to this year’s Henley Passport Index.
