Latest World News: American restaurant ordered to pay employees $140,000 after hiring F

Investigators also discovered that employees were deprived of their overtime pay

A restaurant in California has been ordered to pay a total of $140,000 in back wages and damages to 35 employees by the US Department of Labor. According to a report by FoxNewsthe restaurant owner has hired an “alleged” priest to have employees confess their “sins on the job”.

Che Garibaldi Inc., which operates Mexican restaurant Taqueria Garibaldi in Sacramento, was fined after a thorough investigation by the Department of Labor. Federal investigators call the “most brazen” acts of corruption an employer has committed against its staff.

“Under oath, an employee of Taqueria Garibaldi explained how the restaurant offered a supposed priest to hear about their ‘sins’ at work while other employees reported that a manager had falsely claimed that immigration issues would be raised by the ministry’s investigation,” regional labor prosecutor Marc Pilotin said in the statement.

“This employer’s despicable attempts to retaliate against employees were intended to silence workers, obstruct an investigation and prevent the collection of unpaid wages.”

The owner hired the fake priest to hear confessions during working hours and “draw out the sins,” including asking if they were late for work, stole money from the restaurant, or had “bad intentions” toward their employer.

Investigators also found employees were being denied overtime pay, which violates the Fair Labor Standards Act, the statement said.

“They also learned that the employer was illegally paying employee tip pool managers, threatening employees with retaliation and negative immigration consequences for cooperating with the department, and firing a worker they believed had complained to the department,” the DOL said.

“The U.S. Department of Labor and its attorney’s office will not tolerate retaliation in the workplace and will act quickly to make it clear that immigration status does not affect workers’ rights under the Fair Labor Standards Act,” Regional Labor Attorney Marc Pilotin said in the statement.

Taqueria Garibaldi agreed to pay $70,000 in back wages, $70,000 in damages and $5,000 in civil penalties “due to the deliberate nature of their violations,” Fox News said.
