In a moving X-thread, a UC Davis assistant professor highlighted how hard work, money, and time-consuming student preparation can be rendered useless in minutes by visa officers who refuse to grant visas to students who have been accepted into American universities.

Linguistics professor Masoud Jasbi pointed out that often even the brightest student visa applications are turned down because the visa issuing officer didn’t get the right vibes for some reason!

He points out that clauses like 214b are used as a black check for visa denial. According to the U.S. Embassy’s website, under Section 214(b), applications may be denied if an applicant does not credibly demonstrate that they will depart at the end of their authorized stay and that their intended activities in the United States will be consistent with the status of the visa.

In his thread X, Jasbi mentions that a student who was admitted to an American university was asked to prove that he will return to Iran, his country of origin. People often try to prove their intention to return by showing that they have family ties, jobs or property in their country of origin. Students from disadvantaged backgrounds often don’t have those last two things in their name.

Also, if the United States really wants students to return home after graduation, then why does the law also provide pathways to jobs and residencies like OPT after graduation? Does the United States want good talent to stay in the United States or not? ! Can the government make up its mind? Questions from Jasbi.

Jasbis’ tweets have so far garnered over 80,000 likes since they were posted yesterday. In the comments, many shared similar experiences and wondered why visa laws are loosely defined and enforced.

A former diplomat wrote, when I was a visa officer I was uncomfortable with the arbitrary and vindictive attitudes that some of my colleagues displayed, but now that I’m out and people are sharing stories with me, what’s going on there. deny fully funded doctorates at Johns Hopkins?
