National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval attended the “Friends of BRICS” meeting in the South African capital of Johannesburg on Monday. During the meeting, the issue of cybersecurity was discussed at length. Besides the BRICS, the following BRICS-friendly countries – Belarus, Burundi, Iran, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Kazakhstan and Cuba – also participated in the discussions.

The NSA-level meeting is nearing the August 22-24 summit,

Doval stressed the need for collective efforts to address emerging cybersecurity challenges. Countries of the South in particular must overcome resource limitations. In this regard, India will always remain at the forefront and work closely with the countries of the South, he said.

Doval also pointed out that the severity of cyber risks will increase exponentially with the advent of disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data and the Internet of Things.

He spoke about the link between cybercriminals and terrorists, including the use of cyberspace for financing, money laundering, radicalization, lone wolf attacks, recruitment and secure communications.

The younger population is particularly vulnerable to the spread of extremist ideologies via social media sites, as they are tech-savvy and have impressionable minds, he noted.

Doval also held several bilateral meetings with his counterparts from BRICS and Friends of BRICS countries.
