Protests raged across Iran and Iraq after Denmark and Sweden allowed the Quran to be burned under rules protecting free speech. On Thursday, protesters in Iraq burned down the Swedish embassy in Baghdad.

The two protesters belonged to a group calling itself “Danish Patriots”, which staged a similar protest last week and streamed the events live on Facebook.

Several thousand Iraqis demonstrated in Baghdad on Saturday against the fires in the two Nordic countries, during a rally called by Iraqi ruling parties and armed groups, many of which are close to Iran.

The organizer of Monday’s protest in Copenhagen trampled on the Koran and set it on fire in an aluminum tray next to the Iraqi flag on the ground.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Saturday that people who desecrate the Quran should face “the most severe punishment”.
