Latest World News: Afghanistan flash flood death toll rises to 26, 40 missing
The death toll from overnight flash floods caused by torrential rains in central Afghanistan has risen to 26, with more than 40 people missing, officials said on Sunday.
Shafiullah Rahimi, spokesman for the state ministry for disaster management, said a total of 31 people had been killed across the country in floods since Friday and significant damage had been caused to property and farmland.
Government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said emergency aid was being rushed to the main disaster area in Jalrez district of Maidan Wardak province.
Although Afghanistan is at the western end of the Asian monsoon footprint, flash floods occur regularly during the rainy season when heavy rains flow along dry riverbeds.
Rahimi told a news conference that 604 homes had been fully or partially damaged and hundreds of acres of farmland and orchards destroyed in Jalrez since Friday.
Across the country, “over the past four months, 214 people have been killed in incidents related to natural disasters,” Rahimi said.
