Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse is not only the continuation of the famous Into the Spider-Versebut it is the middle of a trilogy which will conclude with the Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Intermediate entries in trilogies can go one of two ways. They can either be just another entry in a franchise that ends well in the end, or the darkest entry where things go wrong for our heroes and leave you wondering how they will achieve victory in the third film, even if it’s not the case. it doesn’t necessarily end on a cliffhanger.

Looks like Through the Spider-Verse might fall into the latter category, with writer/producer Christopher Miller likening it to the trope-setter for dark, edgy sequels: Star Wars Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back.

Speaking in the latest issue of Empire magazine, Miller teased, “People who have seen Through…told us it was like The Empire Strikes Back of the spider worms franchise.

“It shows you worlds you haven’t seen, and it’s a moving story that ends in a place where you need to see the third. So, yes: it’s our Empire.”

Miles actor Shameik Moore also reflected on his character’s state of mind in the sequel, saying: “He’s older, a bit more experienced. But he misses his friends. He’s gaining in skill, but he wants more of a challenge.”

Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse has had plenty of time when it comes to when we can actually see it. It was originally supposed to be released in theaters in April 2022 but was later pushed back to the following October.

The release date was later moved a third time, with the most recent (and hopefully final!) release date being June 2, 2023.
