Akhmal, the dead Abdullah and Jameela

Thrissur: In a harrowing incident, a drug addict brutally murdered his grandparents. Residents of Nayarangadi Abdulla (75) and his wife Jameela (64) were murdered by cutting their throats. Their daughter’s son, Akhmal (26) was arrested by the police.

The incident happened Monday morning. The murder was discovered when the couple’s son, Naushad, came to their house with morning breakfast. Both bodies lay on the ground floor of the split-level house and the heads were found severed.

Jameela’s head was placed on the stairs. The police confiscated the murder weapon, a machete from the house. The deceased and the accused lived together in the house.

Akhmal is the son of the couple’s daughter Nimitha from their first marriage. He was raised by Abdullah and Jameela from an early age. Conflicts were frequent in the house. Akhmal was admitted to a rehabilitation center last year. He returned three months ago after treatment.

After that, Akhmal worked in a private bank. Relatives were relieved as they believed he had resumed a normal life. However, the problems returned a few days ago. Following this, Naushad had come on Sunday evening to take his parents with him, but the couple were not ready to leave. The double murder happened hours after Naushad left the house.

SP Ankit Ashokan said further details of the crime, including the motive and whether other people were involved, are being investigated. After completing police procedures, the bodies were transferred to Thrissur Medical College for an autopsy. Burial is on Tuesday at Vailathur Juma Masjid.

Relatives claim that Akhmal started using drugs and creating problems at home when he started studying in Mangalore. He instigated fights when he couldn’t find the money to buy drugs. He was very active on social media and also posted videos of himself dancing from time to time.

A few days ago, he shared his joy at successfully graduating from Mangalore University on social media. Hours before the murder, he also posted some vague songs.

When Naushad came to the couple’s house on Sunday morning, he stared out the window as his knocks went unanswered. There he saw the grueling sight of his parents’ bodies lying in blood. Somehow managing to open the door, he stepped in to find the monstrosity of his parents cut off and ran away screaming. He fell on the porch. He then called his friend and ward member, SK Khalid, who contacted the police.
