Latest World News: 24-year-old Indian student assaulted by car thieves in Canada

Several witnesses rushed him to hospital where he died on July 14.
Toronto:
A 24-year-old Indian student, who worked as a food delivery partner in Canada, has been killed after being violently assaulted in a fatal carjacking, according to media reports.
Gurvinder Nath was delivering pizza around 2:10 a.m. on July 9 on Britannia and Creditview roads in Mississauga when unknown suspects confronted him and attempted to steal his vehicle, CTV News reported.
Investigators believe there are multiple suspects involved and the food order was placed as a way to lure the driver to that specific area, Peel Regional Police Homicide Bureau Inspector Phil King said, adding that investigators obtained an audio recording of the Pizza Pizza order placed prior to the attack.
After Nath arrived, he was violently attacked and seriously injured by a suspect who stole his vehicle and fled, police said.
Several witnesses came to his aid and called for help before Nath was rushed to a trauma center where he was pronounced dead on July 14.
Siddhartha Nath, India’s consul general in Toronto, said Nath’s death was a “heartbreaking loss” and he offered his condolences to his family, friends and the wider community, CBC reported.
He said the Consulate General contacted the family after his death.
“It was encouraging for me to see how the community responded, came together both online and physically to support the family in this time of grief,” the Consul General said.
“Of course, nothing can make up for the loss, but it will be a comfort to the grieving family and it is also a signal of the spirit of the community because it is at times like this that spirit, solidarity and a sense of empathy are tested.” The Consul General said he hoped those responsible would be brought to justice.
Inspector King said that despite the start of the investigation, police believe Nath was an innocent victim.
Nath’s vehicle was found abandoned within hours of the attack in the area of Old Creditview and Old Derry roads – less than three miles from the crime scene, King said.
The working theory is that there may have been serious injuries (to Nath) which may not have been anticipated and which may have caused (the suspects) to dispose of the vehicle sooner, he said.
The vehicle has since undergone a forensic examination and several pieces of evidence have been recovered, King added.
Police say there is no known link between Nath and his attackers.
I would like to remind those involved that regardless of your level of involvement, you are complicit in the murder of Gurvinder Nath and you will be arrested and charged accordingly, King said.
Nath’s body will be airlifted to India on July 27 with the help of the Indian Consulate General in Toronto, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) reported.
Last week, CTV News Toronto spoke with Nath’s family and friends, who said the Brampton resident was on summer vacation before returning to his final semester of business school.
He was innocent, he was just delivering pizza (when) random people hit him on the head, Nath’s cousin Balram Krishan said.
Nath arrived in Canada from India in July 2021 and intended to open his own business.
On Saturday, more than 200 people gathered in Mississauga for a candlelight vigil for Nath, CBC reported.
Speakers at the vigil said Nath came to Canada carrying his family’s hopes and now his family is grieving over the loss of one of his three sons.
“You come to Canada with a dream. You start your life. But these people stole a dream,” said Bobby Sidhu, a friend of a relative of Nath.
Sidhu said, “Canada was known for peace. And I hope that in our country such senseless and ruthless crimes will end. Everyone could identify with Gurvinder. I think that’s why the community came together.”
