Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants and frequent Apple predictor, has released a new report claiming that Apple will finally add 120Hz ProMotion to regular iPhone models, but not until 2025, more than two years from now.
IN tweet Showing off his predictive roadmap, Yang claims that Apple will introduce a “tablet” and Dynamic Island in current Pro models for standard iPhone 15 models later this year, as has been rumored for some time. But standard iPhones will still use the LTPS display technology, not the LTPO found on the Pro (and Apple Watch) models. LPTO allows the refresh rate to be changed in a more power efficient way and is considered essential for both ProMotion and permanent display on the iPhone. (Both features may exist with LTPS displays and other display technologies, but the resulting battery drain is generally considered too much for an iPhone or Apple Watch.)
According to Yang’s roadmap, next year’s iPhone will have the same display features as this year’s. However, in 2025, regular iPhones will start to match today’s Pro models – with an LTPO display that supports ProMotion at 120Hz, and also, presumably, an always-on display. The Pro models are said to get Face ID sensors under the display later that year, as well as a small punch-hole for the front-facing camera. Then in 2027, Yang predicts the standard models will get this arrangement, while the Pro models will remove the front camera below the display to completely free up the bezel.
This all sounds very exciting, but there’s a word of caution with these projections: While they use the best information available from a respected supply chain analyst, it’s very difficult to predict what Apple will do even next year, let alone two or more years into the next year. future. The technologies available and their cost can change quite a lot, and even Apple hasn’t set the features of the 2025 iPhone in stone yet.
